Petrovaradin Fortress, built in the 17th century, rises above the city. On its clock, the large hand shows the hours and the small hand shows the minutes—the reverse of a conventional clock.
The main square in the historic city center is home to City Hall and the Name of Mary Church, whose impressive architecture dominates the surrounding area.
Novi Sad, Serbia’s second-largest city, is home to 23 ethnic communities. Six languages are in official use: Serbian, Hungarian, Slovak, Croatian, Rusyn, and Romanian.
Thanks to the diversity of cultures that coexist and continue to develop within the city, Novi Sad was named European Capital of Culture in 2022.
